Spatializing Narrative 6

March 1, 2024
Program

During this micro-conference, we will explore the theme of counter-colonial narratives. Much of the spatial storytelling we see in mainstream media—from video games and immersive theatre to theme parks—relies on Eurocentric tropes of colonization, pillaging, and superstition—stories told from the colonizers’ viewpoint. Counter-colonial narratives reclaim stories from underrepresented perspectives of those colonized or whose stories have been under or misrepresented. This is distinct from “post-colonial” because the reality and impact of colonialism are ongoing and persistent.

Spatializing Narrative 5

February 7, 2023
Program

A micro-conference in which we seek to understand how to “read,” “write,” and “interact” with space to tell stories in new ways enabled by emerging technologies. In an augmented or virtual reality environment, the instinctive choice of a spatial path determines the chronology of events of a story and is, therefore, of particular importance. It is a dynamic relationship where the space activates the narrative, and in turn, the narrative activates a setting in motion.

A micro-conference in which we seek to understand how to “read,” “write,” and “interact” with space to tell stories in new ways enabled by emerging technologies. Human experience allows living only one space-contextualized narrative at a time. In a virtual environment, the instinctive choice of a spatial path determines the chronology of events of a story and is therefore of particular importance. It is a dynamic relationship where the space triggers the narrative, and in turn, the narrative triggers a setting in motion.

Spatializing Narrative 3

February 23, 2021
Program (PDF)

This event frames the challenge of creating a compelling narrative using Augmented Reality (AR) or virtual Reality (VR) and examines the role immersive technologies can play in mediating our social construction of reality.

Spatializing Narrative 2

February 11, 2020
Program (PDF)

The goal of this event is framing the challenge of creating a compelling narrative using room-scale Virtual Reality (VR) technology.

Spatializing Narrative

October 4, 2018
Program (PDF)

The goal of this event is framing the challenge around using space to tell stories using Augmented Reality (AR). How can we bring together a mobilized participant, AR, and space to add a new dimension of place through stories?
